Style is back. 2018 has revealed that style has returned to the wedding event. We at Sterling Photography International have arrived at this conclusion. This is mainly because of the tone set by 2018 weddings we have attended. Six special trends illustrate the elegant yet casual style for which we feel 2018 weddings will be remembered.
The Meaning of Style
Style is a difficult word to define. Does it mean art, design or fashion? Perhaps it combines all three. The dictionary defines it as “a distinctive quality, form, or type of something…” Style is also defined as “fashionable elegance.”
And sometimes, it is referred to as “beauty, grace, or ease of manner or technique.”
We cannot think about weddings or style without thinking about the obvious pace-setter for any wedding. The bride’s dress is a definite pace-setter. Amber Silva and Dawn Silva Rigney, sisters-in-law and owners of Kinsley James Couture Bridal, weigh in on this matter. They note capes, long sleeves and off the shoulder looks among the biggest wedding dress trends of 2018. (Folks, our point is that those are all elegant details—with flair. And, dare-we-say-it style.) Read More at this special site.
Speaking of the off-the-shoulder trend, this is what they stated. “We think it’s the perfect combination of sophistication and sensuality. Brides who want to show a bit of skin without going over-the-top will love these gowns.”
Special Trends 2018–How Sterling Has Seen It
Here’s how we’ve seen style this year. Whether the gown is “a sweetheart style or a lovely empire waist,” our brides have shone off their individual taste with the back of the gown. The designers state, “Everybody loves a sleek row of buttons down the back of their dress. But why settle for one row when you can have two?” says Silva Rigney. The kissing button trend adds a twist on a more traditional look. And it “elevates an otherwise simple gown with a bit of drama.”
Now, do you know the meaning of “kissing buttons?” These oddly named buttons are simply buttons which are not spaced apart. They touch or almost touch each other as they follow the back, waist and spine of a bride or the cuffs of the groom. You know you have seen such buttons covered in white satin on bridal gowns. You may also spotted them on onyx satin for traditional tuxes or fine leather for sports jackets. Kissing buttons, a lovely detail is just as timeless in 2010 as in 1908.
So, what we are seeing with brides of 2018 is more individuality. Glamorous or understated, we see brides adding little personal details to dresses and accessories. Thus, chances are if you are lucky enough to be a wedding guest this summer, you will see the bride’s own fashion well revealed in her dress at the beginning of the day.
From a Bride Alone to a Sense of the Couple: Style
Then you will see something else. You’ll see the imprint of the couple’s style on the ceremony and reception.
For the dress, look closely. The bride’s personal style might be overlaid onto a traditional silhouette. You’ll see it reflected in unexpected “wow factors” from brides and grooms. These are the ones that set the “style” of the entire wedding ceremony and reception.
Style in Photography
We are sure if you are visiting us at the Sterling Photography International, see us. You will want to know some of the top 2018 to 2019 trends in photography. Well, it’s time to learn a French word. Reportage. It refers to a certain photographic technique. It both reports a story and grabs a significant moment. Reportage is a known style. British photographer Murray Clarke defines this style of photography. He says, “…reportage photographers will plan ahead, assess the lighting around them, plan their shots and then wait for that perfect moment to unfold, often undetected.
A Sterling “Style Note” to New Brides and Brides Who Are Planning a Wedding for 2018-2020
Brides’ magazine has stated reportage is a key trend for the 21st century in wedding photography. And it’s also a key word to know when you interview photographers for your wedding.
According to Nikon, “the more relaxed, informal reportage trend has grown in popularity and prominence… With this style, the little details become a part of the backdrop, while the emphasis is on people, precious sentiments and reactions.”

Latest trend: Professional Photos Only During Ceremony
When the bride walks down the aisle, she looks for her special guests. She hopes to see their smiles and encouraging faces. It is very disheartening to see faces buried in phones. And maybe a little frustrating.
It’s also becoming a trend for brides and grooms to ask their special friends to refrain from snapping shots. They sometimes ask their guests to not take pictures during the ceremony.
Nikon sees more “reliance on the wedding photographer” and his professional staff. This allows the professional photographer to shoot those special moments. Those rare emotional treasures can be captured easier and more naturally. This is especially true if “the guest offer their complete and undivided attention” on the ceremony.
