Making Memories for Mothers has been an important theme this month because Mother’s Day is a global holiday. This wonderful holiday just shows us that mothers hold a treasured place in our lives and in our hearts.
Sometimes the complaint that this holiday is too commercial overwhelms its beautiful sentiment.
Well, it is true that consumerism abounds around this holiday. In fact, the day for honoring and Making Memories for mothers has become one of the largest global shopping months of the year.
Shopping to Make Memories for Mothers
Soon we continue to our photographic topic of the day.
If you read on, you will see that we present the most valuable gift that is the unsung hero for mothers on any holiday.
But first, let’s take a quick look at our surprising national shopping list for this Day that delights moms:
- The Small Remembrances–We will spend on Cards: $813 million.
- Fragrant and Festive–Flowers will claim: $2.6 billion.
- Because Mother is a Diamond–Jewelry is a very popular choice for Mom: $4.6 billion
- Pampering Mom results in quite a few gift-cards that garner Personal services: $1.8 billion—We have to say, that’s a whole lot of manicures!
- Ultimately we spend a retail total: $23.1 billion.
- And the newest way to spend, online shopping, contributes its own amazing total sales: $6.9 billion—And we suspect that number is conservative, because, how can you really discern what some of the “gifts” are, especially appliances and home-goods?
And Mother’s Day is not just about Mom!
We use the Mother’s Day excuse to honor many of the people who have blessed our lives with nurturing and encouragement. You see, we have discovered a full 35% of the Mother’s Day shoppers are buying for grandmothers, sisters,
friends and even daughters.
These additional gift recipients are responsible for “effectively expanding the reach of the holiday.”
It’s sad that our lives are so busy, we find it difficult to remember to thank any of those people who have shaped our lives in a nurturing way.
Making Memories for Mothers at the Wedding Event
Sterling never fails to find moments to honor mothers of the brides and grooms at weddings. It is his way of doing homage to mothers everywhere. Those special moments between mothers and sons or mothers and daughters are rare on a Wedding Day. And he documents them with extra care.
In fact, making memories for mothers at weddings is a very special part of the mission at Sterling’s Wedding Photography International.
Is Mother’s Day Too Commercial?
Perhaps we can be excused for our tendency to use money to demonstrate our love and be extravagant during this holiday. Why? Because Sterling photo thinks we all feel like a little bit like children again as we shop for Mom’s special gift.Likewise, life is very busy, and we often have difficulty finding moments to let mom know how much we love and appreciate her.
Let’s face it; sometimes we can’t even find time to spend with our mothers on a phone call. Thus perhaps we should feel a little grateful to the consumer-conscious world of business and industry for giving us this big reminder that we should take a moment for our mothers.
The Perfect Gift
So, we are going out on a limb here and expressing our feeling about the perfect gift for any mother. She can be any age, any shape, and any temperament, and this gift will thrill her. Of course, since Sterling is a photographer, perhaps you think this is going to be a commercial spiel
about some big mother’s portrait shoot. And that might be nice, but it is not our top candidate for “perfect gift” for making memories.
Making Memories With Mom
In fact, giving mom a portrait session might add to her sense of self-esteem and joy. However, many mothers are notoriously camera shy and th
ey would hate or never use a gift-card or photo session for themselves. —For the grand-kids, yes, but not for themselves.
The Ultimate Memory-Maker
So, ultimately, what do we think is the perfect gift? And, this is amazing: it’s almost free, and it really doesn’t have anything to do with our business. We won’t keep you in suspense any longer. Here is our best gift idea:
1. Find an old photo of yourself, a snapshot or portrait of yourself as a child.
2. Then get it copied in a personal size, maybe 5×7.
3. Buy a cute-but not trendy- frame for it…a timeless, simply one.
4. Write a heartfelt note with or without a card. Done. Memory Made. The irony of this is that sometimes a picture that is ugly or embarrassing in your eyes will be a favorite in her eyes.
Our Real Life Example
Our blogger did this for her mom one year. She selected an old photograph from her childhood.
The picture showed a grinning, lanky girl of 10 with a messy ponytail on her head and a bright pink bike at her side, squinting in the sun. She wore sloppy shorts, revealing badly skinned up knees.
It quickly became one of her mother’s favorite mementos.
We’d bet you could find such an equally happy, sappy, cute photo of yourself, on or off of your phone.
Well, get it off your phone, off your computer or out of that old photo book.
Get it printed.
Get it framed.
The thing about a cherished photo is you hold a piece of time in the palm of your hand. When you present it to her, you can see her remember the magic of your childhood. It’s priceless.
