‘Fauxtography’ – clever name, right? While the name elicits a chuckle, or at least a smirk, hiring a ‘faux photographer’ for your big day will steal your smile and leave you feeling ripped off and angry.

Make sure your photographer is credible

The popular wedding planning site, Offbeat Bride, has an excellent article aimed at helping future brides and grooms ensure that they are hiring a credible, skilled photographer and not a phony. Unfortunately, there are people out there who will misrepresent themselves and claim to own images that they have stolen from others. While this is not especially common, you certainly don’t want to do business with a person or company like this! Here are just a few tips from the article to consider when judging the credibility of a wedding photographer:

  1.  Always schedule a time to meet with the photographer in person and use your good judgment when talking face-to-face with that person. Ask lots of questions and feel free to ask for samples of their work.
  2. Look for reviews online. If you don’t find many, ask the photographer to supply you with contacts who can give you a review. If a photographer’s business is brand new, they may not have many online reviews yet. Ask for references.
  3. Scope out the photographer’s social media pages. Often, photos are updated more regularly on social media. Make sure the quality of photos posted on Facebook and Instagram matches the quality of photos posted to the photographer’s website.
