How do we compose that perfect shot? We here at Sterling Photography International can admit this can be a complicated task because just as you think you have it, the frame changes. But at the end of the day, the photographer is responsible for what appears in their chosen frame.

An Eye for Composition

Photographers often ask themselves, “Why is this in my shot?” Or sometimes we ask ourselves, “Does this belong in my frame?” The answer depends on what we are trying to convey in our message. Take this picture above for example, it can really mean different things to different people. Serenity. A need to explore possibilities. A time for change.

Nature-A photographer’s playground

Nature provides settings that offer boundless opportunities for creating peaceful, attractive, expressive, inspiring, and dreamlike photographs. When we photograph outdoors, we keep in mind the importance of how visual elements are arranged. We look at what presents itself in front of us and how we want to display it in a photograph.

Take your sweet time

We know as professionals that all good things come to those who wait. It’s important to take one’s time when trying to figure out what your subject is. Once you are conscious of what the elements are that you want present in your image then you can look more carefully at composition.

The Space Between

A usual photographic scene contains three different regions:

  • Foreground
  • Background
  • Midground

Foregound is the range that is closest to the camera, the background can be what is behind the subject of the photograph or whatever is furthest away from the camera, and the midground is the space in between.

Because the foreground is the most predominant to the observer, placing the main subject of your photograph there is a simple way to make it stand out.
